Caspian M Series - 2004

Caspian M Series - 2004

The Roksan Caspian M Series, launched in 2004, was a remarkable representation of British audio engineering. The series consisted of various components, including a pre-amplifier, mono amplifier, integrated amplifier, stereo power amplifier, phono amplifier, CD player, FM tuner, and a dedicated Xerxes speed control unit. Each piece was designed to deliver high-fidelity sound and showcased Roksan’s commitment to precision audio.

The Caspian Mono Amplifier delivered 100 watts of output into 8 ohms, providing exceptional control and musicality. It utilised a symmetrical bi-polar transistor design, ensuring balanced sound. The deep, tuneful bass and clear midrange created an immersive listening experience. High frequencies were crisp and detailed, never harsh. At the amplifier’s core was a massive toroidal transformer, complemented by twin bridge rectifiers and smoothing capacitors, ensuring clean power delivery. It operated with a low-noise differential front-end stage and Class A drivers. The output stage ran in Class AB, producing both warmth and precision across musical genres. The amplifier also employed full output stage monitoring for speaker protection and was ideal for pairing with the Caspian Pre-Amplifier, though it could also be used in a high-performance stereo power system.

The Caspian Pre-Amplifier was designed with a focus on simplicity and performance. Its exterior, while understated, concealed a dual-mono configuration that isolated power supplies to maximise sonic performance. Vocals were handled with finesse, while the overall sound was transparent and detailed. When partnered with equipment like the Caspian Stereo Power Amp or Monoblocs, the pre-amplifier’s performance reached new heights. Roksan’s HCD-02A interconnects further elevated its capabilities, making it a popular choice among audiophiles.

The revised Caspian Integrated Amplifier, building on the strengths of earlier models, offered improved bandwidth, dynamic range, and power. The midrange became more open, highs smoother, and bass deeper, resulting in a captivating soundstage. Delivering 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms (and 100 watts per channel into 4 ohms), it easily powered demanding speakers. With a sleek silver faceplate featuring modest knobs and buttons, the amplifier exuded classic British design elegance. It offered flexibility with three pre-amplifier outputs, allowing for bi-amping, tri-amping, or integration with subwoofers or EQ systems.

The Caspian Stereo Power Amplifier used a symmetrical design with Class A drivers and a Class AB output stage. This ensured efficient, transparent sound reproduction, delivering 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Its robust power supply allowed it to handle complex musical passages with ease.

Roksan extended the Caspian range with a Phono Amplifier for analogue enthusiasts, a Caspian CD Player known for its precision, an FM Tuner for high-quality radio reception, and the Xerxes Speed Control for their turntables, ensuring precise timing and pitch—critical for vinyl lovers.

Design and Remote Control Roksan paid attention to user experience as well, with features like the Dove Bar Remote, a sculpted silver controller that operated a stylish motorised volume control. While some of its small buttons were less intuitive, it added a touch of elegance to the overall system.

The Caspian series earned praise for its crisp, clear sound signature, delivering transparent highs and natural midrange tones. Bass was tight and controlled, though sometimes described as refined compared to more powerful amplifiers. Nonetheless, at a fraction of the cost of high-end alternatives, the Caspian series provided similar levels of performance with outstanding build quality.
